Mexico International AIDS Conference – Stories

Here are some articles written by George Arende (from Nairobi, Kenya) during the International AIDS Conference that he wants to share with the young people in the Lutheran Communion:

Raped while young and infected with HIV

“I had no choice, he had sex with me,” laments Herlyn Auiras, a survivor of abduction and three rape ordeals. At 16, Auiras together with her friend were abducted and smuggled into South Africa.

The drama began innocently enough when Auiras and a friend planned to attend a concert in Windhoek City under the pretext of visiting the friend’s grandfather. Money being a challenge, the two girls accepted a ride from a couple of Namibia truck drivers.

The drivers, originally from South Africa, assured Auiras and her friend that they would bring them back to Namibia on the return trip. “At the immigration checkpoint they covered us with blankets and passed the border into South Africa,” recalls Auiras.

“At Jo’burg, one of the drivers wanted to have sex with me. He threatened to hurt me if I didn’t give in,” she remembers.

Auiras begged the driver to wear a condom. Although he reluctantly agreed, the condom broke during the rape. He warned Aurias against going to the police noting that she was in South Africa illegally.

The two young women existed for several days without food or a place to sleep. “Any time we asked to go home, he said next week!’

Youths in my Church.

Hey everyone! this is helga thomas.i live in a place, jeypore. This blog is to tell you about the youths in my church.I come from the Jeypore Evangelical Lutheran Church, situated in the southern part of the state, Orissa ,in India.Youths in my church play a very dramatic role. The youth programs are conducted in accordance with the present world scenario.Issues like Environmental crisis,Health concerns,Communal violence,Equal Rights,Sports and Music are being taken heed now.

Even though my town is located in the poorest district of India, still then the youths are well connected with the present world through education, media and church.Youths are well educated, well connected via internet, electronic devices, etc. The church plays a leading role in updating the youths by conducting seminars and workshops on various burning issues. The youths follow-up with new strategies and they implement it on their own life.In recent times we had programs on Environmental and Health issues. As a follow-up, me and our youths went around the church  to clean the vicinity and planted new saplings. In the same manner, after a workshop on HIV/AIDS,many of our youths went around the jeypore town in rally to increase awareness in fighting against HIV/AIDS and the prevalent prejudices.

Communal violence is one of the most pathetic and tragic issue in my country since India is a land of different religions, cultures, dialogues and faith.India known as the land of spirituality and philosophy, was the birthplace of some religions, which even exist today in the world. There are many tragic communal incidents which distract the harmony in our society. Our Youths partake in campaigns to protest against it and they even move to the victimised places as volunteers to reinstate the life of the people living there.

Sports and Music is the greatest passion of our youths in church. The youths are very much skilled players and also very talented musicians. The youth mass has a football team called the Christian Youth Association Football Club( C.Y.A FC).The team has won many titles and some of the players have represented in the state and national level.Every now and then, the youths organise day and  flood-light tournaments in Cricket,Football,Volleyball and Badminton.

In the field of music, our youths play a melodic role in the church as well as in different other programs. The church has the only brass band in Orissa called the Jeypore Brass Group. The group has a collaboration with a German Church. The Church Choir has 30-40 members with musical accompaniments in guitars, keyboard and drums. The Choir travel to many towns and villages to spread the Good News of Christ through their music.

To be a man, to be a woman.

Last week I’ve read an artical in polish magazin about men’s and women’s brain. I can say that scientists are very confused and puzzeld. Some of them claim that our brains are very very similar. The others affirm that brain has a sex. Social influences doesn’t have a big meaning for an evolution of human brain. Every one is a man or a women by being in mother’s womb. We don’t born as a white sheet of paper. Our brains are very similar but in the same time so different! It’s amazing and inexplicable phenomenon. Scientists don’t have a clear answer why we are, men and women, so different.

For me it’s a proof that we are creatures of God. Only He is able to create something that we are not able to understand and explain. I think also that man should be gratefull to God that is a man, and woman should be gratefull to God that is a woman, because everyone of us is special and unique. Everyone of us has tasks from God as a man and as a woman.

Youth caucus delivers statement to religious leaders at AIDS 2008

For the first time, a youth caucus delivered a statement to the more than 600 religious leaders meeting at the Ecumenical Pre-Conference to the International AIDS Conference in Mexico.

Youth of faith are conservative, moderate and liberal.
Youth of faith are infected, effected and affected by HIV and AIDS.
Youth of faith are abstinent, sexually active, married and single.
Youth of faith are of every race, socio-economic class and ethnicity.
Youth of faith are women, men, men who have sex with men, gay, straight, transsexual, people who use drugs and sex workers.
Youth of faith do not all speak English.

Our values come from our faith, but our safety comes from our access to and understanding of comprehensive sex education.

Youth of faith will be and are meaningfully involved in all levels of the churches’ response to HIV and AIDS.

However, meaningful involvement of youth and children requires meaningful investment from us all. It requires young people to raise our voices, and it requires our elders to open their ears.

HIV is a virus, not a moral condition. Youth of faith strive to end stigma between faith-based and secular organizations to make access to treatment, care and prevention to increase the quality of life for all people living with HIV and AIDS.

We can no longer wait to be protected! We look forward to working with all of you to end this pandemic. Truly, our Faith is in Action.
